Overwhelmed by Riding Goals? ⚡
Dec 17, 2024Do you feel like you’re doing all the things—training, competing, horse care, and maybe even managing a business—yet still feel like you’re falling short?
As equestrians, we’re often high achievers by nature. But trying to do it all can leave us feeling scattered and exhausted, without much to show for our efforts.
The good news? Success doesn’t come from doing more—it comes from doing less, but with sharper focus.
Here are 5 tips to help you simplify your riding journey, eliminate distractions, and make meaningful progress toward your goals:
1. Stop Trying to Do It All
As much as we’d love to excel at everything—eventing, show jumping, breeding, running a barn—it’s just not sustainable.
You can do anything, but not everything.
Instead, ask yourself:
- What truly matters to me right now?
Focusing on fewer priorities gives you the time, energy, and resources to excel. Remember: saying “no” to one thing creates space to say “yes” to what really matters.
2. Use the 80/20 Rule
Did you know 80% of your results come from just 20% of your efforts? Most of your time and energy is spent on things that bring little return.
The key is identifying your 20%:
- Which activities move you closer to your riding goals?
- What gives you the most joy, fulfillment, or progress in the saddle?
Once you know, double down on that 20% and let go of the rest.
3. Get Clear on Your Priorities
Success isn’t just about setting goals—it’s about knowing what you’re willing to sacrifice to reach them.
Ask yourself:
- What am I willing to give up to hit my goals?
- What distractions can I eliminate to focus on what matters most?
For example: If competing at a higher level is your priority, you might choose to spend less time on casual trail rides or breeding projects to free up time for focused training.
4. Define Success on Your Own Terms
Success looks different for everyone.
For some, it’s about winning ribbons. For others, it’s about:
Learning new skills
Bonding with your horse
Or simply having more fun
Before you simplify, get clear on what success means to YOU. Once you know, it’s easier to decide where to invest your time, energy, and money.
5. Focus on One Thing at a Time
Trying to tackle too many goals at once will leave you spinning your wheels.
Instead, pick one priority to focus on for a set period.
For example:
- If your goal is improving your jumping, dedicate the next month to pole work, grids, and courses.
- If you want to compete more, spend time prepping for shows instead of juggling multiple disciplines.
